Pokemon 3D

For the longest time people have been wanting to explore the Pokemon universe in 3D and now thanks to Kolben games it is very much possible. Tuesday 29 January 2013

When gaming costs someone their job.

So, usually I tend to just spam my videos to let you guys know about what I've been doing and what games are good, but today I'm angry.
Recently I played the hilariously frustrating 'I Get This Call Everyday' (First Impressions vid here), a game where you play a guy working in a call centre, as the game developer David Gallant does. You get increasingly frustrated by idiots calling you up and asking stupid questions and being demeaning, but you do the job anyway, so you don't get fired.

Today this article was floating around the internet. Turns out because of the game David Gallant is under investigation by the CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) and has lost his job. Yeah......
So, apparently any kind of expression of how someone feels in their work is now something worth firing them for. It's downright despicable.
Personally, I don't understand. David has stated that not everyone who calls up is like this and this is just a small percentage of the people he has to deal with. The aim of the game is to be courteous and polite and not get fired, so I don't see what's wrong with that. It's not like anything he did was a breach of any kind of regulation or giving out any personal information of anyone in Canada.
But there you have it, call centres are not friendly places people. Who knew?

Anyway, I'm going to bring this rant to a close. The game is available to buy here for a few dollars, so I suggest you all do that! Also vote for it here on Steam Greenlight.

Ridler out.

Ridler looks at Double Fine Amnesia Fortnight Bundle

In December of last year, Double Fine finally let the world see their creative process, through form of a livestream during their so called 'Amnesia fortnight'. This is basically an in-house game jam, where they split into 5 teams and made 5 game prototypes. People could buy these games through Humble Bundle for charity. I play through the resulting games:

Screenshot Saturday 103

Every Saturday indie game developers from all over the world converge on the Gamedev subreddit  #ScreenshotSaturday thread to post tantalising teasers and trailers of their works in progress. It is a great place to discover new games and developers and we will be picking a few of our favourites each week and posting them here.

Meadow

Very little is known about Meadow at this stage however if the rest of the game matches the standard set by the title screen then it's going to be one to watch for pixel art lovers.

Journey of Eko

The Journey of Eko is an independent Action Adventure game that mixes platforming action, procedural levels, strong roguelike elements and a rich unconventional world. The player controls Eko as he explores a procedurally generated top-down world in search of cities, dungeons, weapons and magic items. Whenever Eko enters a dungeon or fights a monster, the game changes to a procedurally-generated side-scroller platformer level, where all the action happens!(Straight from the developers mouth)

Hammerwatch

Listed as only 20% complete on it's TIGsource development log this is already one great looking pixely dungeon crawler. The fact that I loved playing Gauntlet on C64 growing up as a kid adds to my intrigue as the developer lists that as a major influence, personaly I can't wait.

Wings of St Nazaire

A free to play tribute to the Wing Commander series , Wings of St Nazaire looks like it will be a blast.

That is all for my picks this week .Apologies for the brief Screenshot Saturday post this week , next time it will be back bigger than ever.

Saturday 26 January 2013

Hydorah - Free Indie Shooter

Locomalito is one of my favourite indie game developers and RancidShamble is one of my favourite youtube stars . Combine the two together and you get a short post by me about the following video.

Zineth - Free Indie Skating/Exploration Game

Zineth is a great game on it's own and when combined it with 4 other indie titles including Under The Garden and A Nation of Wind you have a very entertaining and diverse bundle of games on your hands. I highly recommend downloading this free bundle from http://www.thefreebundle.com/ and giving all the games at least a try.

Ridler Gaming looks at Oresome

Space, the final frontier, these are the adventures of the S.S. Ridler (My actual initials, who knew?) in it's mission to mine ores and escape bugs in the alpha version of Oresome by Wordsmith Games. In this free roaming space exploration/ mining game, you build a ship, then mine some stuff, then research some stuff, then buy a bigger ship. Rinse and repeat. Enjoy!

Hey, I'm RegretZero!

Hello, all of you awesome IndieCombo readers! I am RegretZero, a formerly completely independent video games journalist.

Here, let me tell you a bit about myself. I hail from the great winter land of Canada. I've played video games for just about my entire life, but I only really got into video games journalism/criticism about six months ago, in August of 2012. I focus on writing about the indie stuff in the gaming scene, as in my mind the indie part is the best part of gaming.

Anyway though, if your eyes haven't glazed over yet, you can follow me on twitter here to keep up with me whenever I release an article here or on my own website :).

Recently, I joined up as a contributor to IndieCombo, so you'll start seeing my articles popping up around here with increasing frequency.

Some of the regular content that I'd like to bring to IndieCombo is the following:

  • Screenshot Saturday feature articles (Obviously, every Saturday)
  • General criticism and speculation of the Indie Gaming Scene and the Video Games Industry as a Whole (This stuff will come out whenever I get all riled up about an issue in the industry, or something big happens)
  • And more regular content, which I'll introduce as I come up with it.
I look forward to seeing you all around!

Ridler looks at I Get This Call Every Day

Have you ever wanted to work in a call centre? YES, I hear you all cry. Well today is your lucky day. Through the amazing mind of David S Gallant we can find out for ourselves! Marvel at the amazing desk we sit at, gaze at the beautiful monitor of customer information..... Enjoy!

Croixleur - Japanese Indie Hack and Slash Arcade Action

Early Look at Dimensia

16 year old Andrew Leach may have entered the game development field rather reluctantly after having no other choice of subject except programming at school , but his first project, a puzzle platformer entitled Dimensia is showing a lot of potential . Take a look at the video below and visit Kolben Games to download the pre-beta release demo.

Ridler Gaming - Bundle Unboxing - Flibble

I started a new series looking at overlooked bundles and games from bundles that people just, kind of, well, ignored when they bought all these indie game bundles which are so prominent over the web. In this first episode, I look at Flibble; an Atari inspired adventure game by UK developer Zed games.

Lazy Brain Games Season 1 Bundle

The Season 1 Bundle by Lazy Brain Games contains 8 very unique and fun little shoot'em ups and is a free download. I highly recommend downloading it and if you enjoy what you play consider leaving a tip via the donation button on their site. They have  already released games for Season 2 so there has never been a better time to catch up.

Ridler plays Freedom Planet.

Today, I look at a game which looks like Sonic and feels like Sonic, but isn't Sonic. The game was made as a fan game for Sonic, and it's very Sonic-like. Sonic. But, yeah, the game is Freedom Planet. It's on kickstarter and it's fricking awesome.

Insert Title Here : A Nifty "Experiment"

"Insert Title Here" is an interactive/experimental game where you can decide which path to take and how you will react.

Ridler Gaming looks at Jelly No Puzzle

Today I look at an amazing Japanese puzzle game in the form of Jelly No Puzzle. I attempt to work out these intricate puzzles without understanding what is happening or what I'm doing. Hilarity ensues. But this game is absolutely amazing and I implore you to play it! It's free after all!

Anodyne - Indie Zelda Like

If you like what you see in the gameplay video below please consider giving Anodyne a thumbs up on Steam Greenlight.

Ridler Gaming play Bernie Needs Love

Today, we look at a game with questionable morals. Bernie, the protagonist of this 8 bit styled platformer by Protomni multimedia, wanders around the city looking for pills of viagra so he can have sex with his much younger girlfriend. This game is incredibly frustrating but is also just in alpha so I expect a few changes to be made. Watch me get incredibly frustrated:

Free Indie Game Ninjammin Beat Jitsu

Ninajammin Beat-Jitsu is a free Windows PC platformer that is really stylish and tells a crazy tale. It has great music and the gameplay is a blend of Guitar Hero meets Mario and Jet Set Radio. Take a look at me playing badly below and go download it for yourself, it's available free on YoYo or you can purchase it for your phone.

Ridler Gaming looks at Drunken Robot Pornography

As a new addition to Indie Combo it only makes sense that I start off with something slightly risque. So, I bring to you Drunken Robot Pornography by Dejobaan games. This game is in alpha at the moment and is an FPS where you go around in a jetpack attempting to stop giant robots from destroying Boston. Got all that? Good. Enjoy!

Monday 14 January 2013

Indie Developers Top 5 for 2013

We've recently asked some friendly indie game developers what five games they where anticipating  most in 2013. Over the course of the coming week we will publish one developers response each day.
Some of their choices may surprise you, others are more predictable - but one thing's for sure, they all have a healthy love of playing games.

Day 3

Noble Kale @DarkestKale NobleKale.com

An Australian indie game developer based in Melbourne, currently working on the 90's inspired fantasy adventure game Arnthak

What is Arnthak ?
In Arnthak the player will take control of Arnthak's Archmage, acquire wealth, rebuild his tower, explore the floating world of Arnthak and destroy his rival's influence.
Arnthak draws influence from a wide range of platform games (mostly from the 90's), and aims to add depth to this style through the use of a massive, single world (rather than isolated levels). Additionally, the player will be able to manipulate items and purchase upgrades to his/her own Tower as the game progresses.
Arnthak has been created in a style similar to classic 90's PC platformers, with strong influence from the games Below the Root, Captain Comic 2 & the Commander Keen series.

Noble's Picks

"I'm currently really looking forward to the following (though, to behonest I'm not entirely sure these are coming next year):

Steam Marines @worthlessbums
Steam Marines has just been this game full of potential since I first saw it on the SSaturday posts over at r/gamedev, and it's always looked cool.

Super Tower Rush @MissScripter
Super Tower Rush is something that I've tried, and I really sense that there's going to be a great game since the core of it is fun already.

 Dungeon Dashers @JigxorAndy
Dungeon Dashers is just so damn good on the look/feel, and running through it quickly a while back showed a good amount of polish even though it wasn't finished.

Mr. Fiskers @fexlabs
As for Mr Fiskers, I got to try that on a #FeedbackFriday (from memory), and I found it to be awesome fun. I really like the core mechanics there, and the art is fantastic.

Path to the Sky @dekdev
Path to the Sky just makes me jealous on a few levels, which is always a great thing.

In all honesty though, these are the first five that came to mind, since it's pretty hard to choose these days."

DAY 2

J.P Stringham @jotapeh We Get Signal

A game designer and developer based in Toronto, Canada - J.P has previously released several games including Super Busker.  He is currently working on a really clever idea for a side scrolling shooter called Tweet Galaxy that uses your twitter account to populate the game world with it's inhabitants.

J.P's Picks

"As you asked.. here are my top 5 indie picks for this year.. with a bit of explanation for each and some links for convenience's sake. :)

1. Castle Story - Sauropod Studios
I kickstarted this project some time ago and the preview builds have just looked glorious. I'm incredibly excited for a clean 3D Dwarf Fortress-like.

2. Alone in Dreams - Infinite Ammo
Rumour has it Alec Holowka is back working on this again with Frederico Machucha, though I'm not really sure. Alec has dropped a couple hints that this might be the case though. Anyway I can always dream?  for a preview vid.

3. Rymdkapsel - Martin Jonasson aka grapfrukt
Although the trailer doesn't show too much, I've seen some early preview builds and this game looks really neat. Isometric real time space strategy in an abstract presentation.

4. Gunpoint - @GunpointGame
Interesting 2D side-on stealth game. Feels like Syndicate and Metal Gear combined in the best of ways. A great example of a game that gives a ton of agency to the player while still providing a level of challenge. Watching the trailers just fills you with that sense of, "Oh crap that is so cool."

5. Electronic Super Joy-  @thegamedesigner
I'm biased on this one, because I've done a bit of the level design and code for it. That said, it is by and large primarily the brainchild of Michael Todd. It's a solid 2D techno platformer where the only means of attack is an instant stomp downwards. This game used to be called Techno Ninja years ago for XBLIG, but was scrapped because.. XBLIG. "

Visit us tomorrow for more Indie Developers top five picks for 2013.

Burn All The Things!

Brought to you by  Tomorrow Corporation  Little Inferno is a fun little game about burning stuff in a fireplace. It is a really simple idea that is very well executed with slick graphics presentation and a charming story and art style. I can't do this game justice through text so please watch the video below to get an idea of the fun that can be had.

Day 1

phil carlisle

Phil Carlisle @zoombapup  mindflock.com

A British indie game developer who is currently hard at work on the very intriguing first chapter of  Eversky entitled - Hope.

What is Hope?

In Hope your goal is to build a home for yourself and for the other inhabitants of a flying platform called a “rig” (which is also called Hope). To achieve this, you must trade, construct, maintain and upgrade new structures, as well as socialise with the inhabitants of the rig. Following the themes of salvage, trade and construction, Hope places the player in the role of a new inhabitant of the rig. Players must choose for themselves how they plan on extending and improving the rig and the lives of its inhabitants.

Phil's Picks
"I tend to just buy games whenever I see someone talking about them and it sounds like they have something interesting to say. So in no particular order:

1) Battlefield 4 - I know, completely goes against what I said about just picking up games as they come along, but I've spent a long time playing the battlefield series and I thought that the community of friends I was playing BF3 with might pick up this one too.

2) Fortnite - This one interests me for the building mechanic. Having the same issues to address myself, I'll be interested to see how they allow the building to work. I'm not a big fan of zombie games particularly, but the idea of building and defending seems like a nice idea. Plus I like the aesthetic, at least its not "AAA realistic" from Epic this time.

3) Under the Ocean - Paul "@farmergnome" Greasley really got me with this one. It needs a tutorial right now, but the atmosphere is bloody amazing and the potential is really great for this one. Again it's solving a lot of the problems of inventory and things that I'm trying to solve, so I use it as "research" for my game too :)

4) The next mount and blade game (god knows what they're calling it now). Mount and Blade was one of my favorite games for the last few years, because it offered something you simply couldn't get in mainstream games. That experience of laying siege to a castle online against 100 or more other players is something pretty special.

5) Maia - I actually don't particularly like the dungeon keeper games, I could never really get into the orc-ish aesthetic for them and at the time I really hated Molyneux (still do a bit). I think Simon and Co will do a great job with this one though. Hopefully they'll have some British humour in there too, because that's gone out of so many brit games now.

6) Prison Architect. Because I know that I'll spend ages just micromanaging prison guards and hosing down troublemakers. I guess this pushes my buttons for building/simulation/micro just well enough that I know I'll pick it up once its released.

Anyway, that's my pick right now."

Monday 7 January 2013

Rico: A Tale Of Two Brothers

A really awesome platformer for a more then reasonable price.

The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden is a surrealist take on the Fall of Man where you play a pissed of guy called Atom who is fighting his way into the Garden of Eden to get Eva back. The game has a dark brooding atmosphere with some really interesting enemy designs and although it is perhaps a little over ambitious for a first time project the developer seems to reaching his end goal. There is a new demo out and even in this early stage of development it shows great promise. I recommend downloading it and having a try, here is a gameplay video of my first time playing the new demo , enjoy!

Could You Make a Game a Month?

Anyone can start making a game, I have started four myself, but actually completing one is where the real challenge lies. The people over at "One Game a Month" realize this and have laid down the challenge to join them in banging out - you guessed it - one game a month for the rest of 2013. The game can be made for any platform including the much underrated "irl" and although the focus is placed on videogames , board games and papercraft are also acceptable. There have already been over sixty completed games submitted to the site that you can play, so why don't you head over there and take a look and maybe join in.

You can watch the keynote speech by @MCFunkypants below too if you like :)

Potatoman Seeks The Troof

PixelJam games sent me a promo copy of Potatoman Seeks The Troof to play on my YT channel
and I've got to say I enjoyed it's difficulty and random sense of humor , it's kind of a strange vegetarian alternative to Meatboy perhaps? Thanks to Miles for sliding a copy my way :D

A new year and a new attitude

It's 2013 and for some reason I feel refreshed , inspired and ready to hump anything that moves .
But lucky for you guys the humping articles will mainly be posted to my other blog , the one that has a high monthly subscription fee.
For now I just want to say there is big plans in the works for this blog and expect to see a lot of articles and videos on upcoming indie games , interviews, giveaways and more.
I want to form a community of creators and promote the shit out of good indie games in the coming 12 mths.
It will also be a place for me to shamelessly self whore my mediocre youtube previews and hopefully get time to expand upon those with some in depth reviews upon further playing of said games, phew what a mouthful. Definitely need a lot more practice writing :P
Hopefully we will be more than just background noise this year.
Thanks for reading , this is the year of the indie allegiance  Indie Combo!  , INDIES UNITE!!!
